Now what a bonus that was. Skipped off work to get to the beach at about 4.30 to find PaulP lurking in his van at Posh Beach. The shorebreak was mahoosive and I think he'd already talked himself out of it. We drove to Bexhill in search of people, but no sign there, so returned to Posh to find Supersuit and Tony about to rig 4.5's. I rigged my 4.5m and got more and more nervous as I looked at the shore dump, but braved it eventually and shot out to score a very very high jump on the first wave. That started things off well as the waves were very big and I was wondering if I'd be up to it. It was actually really nice as things were spaced out well. I had a couple of runs and then I plopped in on an inside gybe and the next thing I saw was my board heading in very fast. It took me a while to realise that my mastfoot had come unplugged. I ditched the rig and swam for the board and started being pummeled toward the shore. As I got closer I saw the hulking, Hofflike PaulP charging reassuringly down the beach. The thoughts that go through your head when you are about to ride the wild shingly surf on a borrowed board are not something I'd like to repeat. I made it in with board unscathed and then looked for my rig, which I had gone back for and dragged in until it was unsafe to hang onto it and the board any longer. The rig was belting downwind in a current (faster than we could walk) and it was nudging further out as well. It dawned on me that I was going to lose it, which is another thought that I don't want to repeat. Eventually Paul spotted that the water looked shallower, so I ditched my harness, ran out as far as I could and then swum for the rig. I got to it just after it looked like the mast snapped and it sunk immediately - wierd, because as I retrieved it, I could see it was in tact. Drama over and apart from a long walk and Paul being late home, all was ok.

When I got back to the launch beach, I put the rig back together and went on to have a cracking sail till about 7.30. Only four of us out and it was mainly sunny and nicely windy. I love this sport. And I'm now getting a new mast extension for my birthday this week, so I can bin the culprit.
